Native American Heritage Month

 

The State of Maryland officially proclaimed the month of November as Indian Heritage Month to celebrate the rich ancestry of American Indians and to recognize their many contributions to Maryland's history.

During this month, the Maryland Commission on American Indian Affairs held many cultural events along with celebrating Maryland's first Native American Heritage Day in Annapolis.

Native American Heritage Day, November 28, 2008

On November 28, 2008 the State of Maryland celebrated the first ever Native American Heritage Day. Secretary of State John P. McDonough, Delegate Talmadge Branch, the Commission, and other members of both the Native American and non-Native community came together to celebrate this historical day.

Throughout the month of November, Baltimore City Public School's tv station aired a special focused on Native American Heritage Month celebrations.

Joint Commission Meetion

In early December the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs participated in the Annual Joint Commission Meeting for the Governor's Commissions. The MCIA was excited to share their accomplishments with the Governor and other Commissions along with celebrating the success of the first Native American Heritage Day in Maryland.
